It has been a common problem of computer lagging, especially on Windows. You can speed up your computer for sure. One of these methods to speed up your computer is to terminate certain unused processes in the process list of the Task Manager. However, the processes you closed might not be closed for permanent. You need the Services Microsoft Management Console(MMC) to help you see which service(or processes set to run permanently, automatically or manually) you do not need and you can turn it off from there. Let's assume that you are using Windows XP and running a user account with administrator accesses. To start the Services MMC, goto Start>Run, and type in services.msc. In an event that it fails to open, try right clicking on My Computer, click on Manage. Then select the Services and Applications node on the tree view. Then go into the Services node. To turn off services, right click the selected service, click on properties, select StartUp Type as Disabled. Certain services may be dependant on the service you want to close: So if you want to disable the service, all other services that are dependant on that service will be terminated as well(the MMC will notify you of this). Let's start from the Wireless service, which sometimes take up some memory. The Wireless support: or Wireless Zero Configuration, which provides automatic configuration and manages 802.11 wireless adaptors. If you are not using a Wireless adaptor, then turning this service off is applicable for you. The Search function of Windows Explorer is good, especially when used with Indexiing. However, indexing large number of files on your hard disk might drastically slow down your computer. Turn off this service if you do not search for files that frequently. Terminal service is also culprit for slowing down your computer. It regularly checks for remote computers and is commonly used for Remote Assistance, Remote desktops, Fast Switching and Terminal Server. This service can be turned off if you do not use Remote Assistance, Remote desktops and Fast Switching. Turn off the Task Scheduler if you do not need to assign scheduled tasks on your system. This can save up some CPU time as it does not check regularly for programs to run. Users who do not install printers on your system can turn off the Printer Spooler service safely. The process's main task is to load the document(scheduled to print) into the memory for later printing. Disabling this service can save up some memory. If you later on install a printer, you'll need to turn on this service before you can print. The Telephony service can also be turned off if you do not run programs control telephony devices and IP based voice connections on the local computer and, through the LAN, on servers that are also running the service. Other services may also be safely turned off, but we cannot gurrantee that by turning off other services not mentioned here might work for your computer. It's best for you to jot down on a piece of paper on what changes have you made so that in an event your computer fails you are able to fix it back. From what I know, if you disable the "printer spooler", it might increase the chances of your computer crashing/freezing. Please advise. --- www.life-aloha.blogspot.com Link or tag me xD Best is both =X |
![]() @Hellclanner i love betaPod :) Date joined: 25 Apr 07Total posts: 525 Location: Woodlands, Singapore | RE: Windows: Turn off Services, Speed up your computer! Ok, disabling doesn't increase the chances of your computer crashing. The sole purpose of Printer Spooler is just to cache in-queue or paused printing tasks in memory for later printing. It doesn't really relate to Windows crashing. However, if you have an incompatible printer or driver, that might just cause the problem. As said in the article: "Users who do not install printers on your system can turn off the Printer Spooler service safely." If you do not install printer on your system, you can turn it off. I have been doing that since i found out that i can disable that service. Well, it works fine with me and i have not once experienced a crash related to Printer Spooler. |
