On 12th September 2007, Sun Microsystems announced the partnership between Sun Microsystems and Microsoft to "expand strategic alliance" and to expand into the market with x64 servers "by enabling cross platform virtualization for Solaris and Windows".

Key features of this partnership are:
Quote: Sun Partner Advantage Program Announcement Email

- Sun and Microsoft have committed to have Solaris 10 certified as a guest OS in Microsoft Virtual Server while Windows Server OS will be certified as a guest in Solaris

- Sun has signed on as a Windows Server OEM, and both companies will collaborate to further enable deployment of Windows Server on Sun x64 systems. Sun will offer a set of Windows Server 2003 products and will provide additional utilities and value-added software offerings to server systems carrying the Windows Server OS.

- Sun will offer Windows Server OS pre-installation and staging services through its Customer Ready Systems program providing support for customers and creating opportunities for partners needing more advanced pre-integration and testing.

- Microsoft will further demonstrate its commitment to Sun x64 systems by building a Sun Interop Vendor Center "IVC" on the Redmond Campus. The IVC will include a demonstration area for Sun x64 systems, act as a working lab for Windows on Sun benchmarks and sales tools, and support customers running joint Sun/Microsoft solutions. Partners and our joint customers will also benefit as the IVC engages product teams from Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Exchange to test and tune these applications on highly scalable Sun x64 servers. In addition, Sun is a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner and a founding member of the Interoperability Vendor Alliance.

- Microsoft is embracing Sun's x64 and Sun StorageTek products and especially views the Sun Fire X4500 as a compelling platform for information archive, virtual tape libraries and applications.

- Finally, Sun's x64 servers and workstations, as well as many Sun StorageTek storage systems, have passed Microsoft's stringent compatibility test suite and are listed in the Windows Server Catalog. These Sun systems have earned the Designed for Windows certification, demonstrating Sun's commitment to meeting the needs of diverse enterprises.

Sun Microsystems never fail to support its customers with the best options. Every single advantages and updates, it will first announce to all its partners.
